Day 2
Session Code: S5-AWhen: March 28, 2023
Level: Intermediate
Track: Critical Employment Practices
Presenters: Juliet Mitchell, Manners are Memorable | Zaylore Stout, Zaylore Stout & Associates, LLC
Description
Election cycles are inherently politically charged times. Campaign ads take over the airways while the most recent debate/attack/tweet dominates the news cycle, especially on social media. Your workplace will not be immune from this political discourse. Depending on what your employees say and how they say it can make the difference between it being protected political speech versus discriminatory conduct in the workplace.
During this session, two presenters will break down for you the differences and nuances regarding civility in the workplace. One speaker will focus on legal definitions and standards as well as the inevitable gray areas that result in discrimination, sexual harassment, and hostile work environment claims filed by employees. The other speaker will highlight how employing etiquette techniques can increase productivity, performance, profits, and progress. Workplace complaints and investigations rise during election campaigns. Your workplace doesn’t have to fall victim to this vicious cycle.
Learning Outcomes:
• Expand knowledge surrounding what is etiquette/civility and why it matters
• Clarify legal standards giving rise to discrimination, sexual harassment, and a hostile work environment in the workplace
• Acquire tools to respectfully and tactfully evaluate and address incivility at work
